Why has it never occurred to me before now?

An excerpt from a previous post (common problems you may experience):

Most coupons say "limit one per purchase." A better wording for this would be "limit one coupon per item purchased," and some companies are putting a little more descriptive wording on their coupons, but most aren't. You will eventually run across a cashier who thinks this wording actually means "limit one per transaction." Ask your cashier, "how many items am I PURCHASING?" They'll answer your quesion, and you just stand there, nod, and smile as a lightbulb goes off in their head. If you cannot get them to understand that each item is a purchase, have them ring each item as a separate transaction.

Yesterday, I *ALMOST* had an issue with this at Wal-Mart.  I was using a P & G coupon and had 4 identical coupons.  The cashier wanted to tell me that it is limited to one per purchase (duh?), but then stopped and said, "I think I've been reading these wrong all along.  I thought it was one per purchase, but this coupon says limit 4 matching coupons per transaction."  Well, yes, in fact, P & G coupons have BOTH phrases on them, so next time you have this issue with any coupon, pull out a P & G coupon and show them that both phrases are on those coupons, so obviously "limit one per purchase" doesn't mean what they think it means.
